The UMG Vault is a building inside a building, located in a business park near Woolwich. It consists of a new five-storey steel frame building inside an existing large warehouse unit, which became a vault/archive building for Sony.

vkhp-consulting carried out the full structural design and specification for the new storage building, including the foundations. 

A special challenge was to reconcile the foundation requirements for the new building with the existing floor and foundations. Original Building Control records and structural drawings were obtained, showing the existing warehouse was supported on a piled raft. A steel transfer structure was designed at ground floor, whilst ensuring the original pile capacities were not exceeded.
